What is Synesthesia?
What is synesthesia, you ask? Well, synesthesia is a neurogical condition in which the synesthetes' senses-smells, sights, sounds, ect.- "cross paths" or "interact" with other senses. All of what the synesthete (a person who has synesthesia- if you didn't catch that already) smells, tastes, sees, or hears in reaction to their synesthesia, is involuntary and consistent. The condition shouldn't be called a disease or a disorder, simply because it is not. Only 1 to 2000 people have synesthesia and a ratio of women to men is only 6:1. Synesthesia is heretic, so usually someone in your family should have it - immediate family or not.
It usually never changes. At times as the synesthete grows older, the colors of a certain letter or number or sound, ect., may change.
Synesthesia is not always about colors, though. Some types of synesthesia may just be what is being heard can have a taste or even a smell. Some is when there is motion and a small "whooshing" or "thumping" may be heard in their minds. There is one type, called Ticker Tape, that is when a word is said, the synesthete can see the word in their minds, like an open book.
